I will be visiting Almaty for 3 nights in the end of August. Can anyone advise me on the night life and safty travelling alone in the city. Have u been to Almaty? There are quite a lot of places to go at night in Almaty , starting from Latin music club Cuba to modern music clubs Crystal. Mostly all of them are very nice, newly equiped, decorated. The avarage price for the entry is between tenge, which is app. As for safety - myself I was traveling through Kazakhstan , Kirgystan and Uzbekistan by my own.
I felt quite safe, although didn't try involve into strange aquaintances or was away from really "courteous" men. All the rest was going just ok.

For those expats visiting Almaty for the first time, I would suggest Mad Murphy's Pub, especially when either the Brits or Aussies are playing football.
The place is packed with both, and quite noisy. But it is nice to hear English and find conversation with some great people. I should add, that you can get some western style food here , nice helpings served with a smile. On warmer days at lunch time nice to sit outside on terrace enjoying those french fries, milk shake and cheese burger. Especially when hambugers are not found outside of Almaty. As for safe, well if you go into places dark and secluded like any city you are asking to get robbed.
But I got lost at about 7PM, after dark, stopped an o;der couple, and they tried to help me beyond what could have been expected, as matter of fact they called their daughter who came and picked me up and delivered me to where I was going. Turned out her and her boyfriend worked at Exxon, and spoke pretty good English, certainly;y better than my Russian. How is that for friendly? If you stay up around the Kazakhstan Hotel.
